   Biography

Agustin J. Barrera was first elected to the School Board in November 2002. He represents District 6, which encompasses the areas of Key Biscayne, the Roads, East Little Havana, Coral Way, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables , South Miami and East Kendall.

Mr. Barrera was born in Havana, Cuba. He emigrated from Cuba to the United States when he was seven years old. While growing up Miami, FL, he attended Shenandoah Middle School, and ultimately graduated from Miami Senior High School. Mr. Barrera went on to receive his Associates Degree from Miami-Dade Community College and his Bachelor of Design from the College of Architecture at the University of Florida. He is currently Director of Operations at Leo A. Daly, Architecture*Planning*Engineering*Interiors, while serving his four year term as a Miami-Dade County School Board Member.

Mr. Barrera’s professional experience includes more than eighteen years in all facets of architectural design, construction administration and project management in educational, commercial, institutional and aviation projects.

Mr. Barrera has been a devoted member of The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana since 1994. He served on the Board of Directors from 1996-2000 and as President from 2001-2003. Mr. Barrera was involved with Front Porch Florida from 2000 - 2002, a program established by Governor Jeb Bush. This program focuses on the family and empowers the resident of the designated Front Porch community to define and resolve neighborhood problems. From 2001 to 2002 he served as Chair for the Riverside Community Council Education Committee and a member of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools Overcrowding Task Force.

Upon Mr. Barrera’s election to the School Board in November 2002, he was appointed to the Facilities Management Committee, where he serves as vice chair, the Business and Financial Services Committee and the District Athletic Advisory Committee. In 2003, the Commissioner of Education, Jim Horne appointed Mr. Barrera to the Advisory Council on Educational Facilities and in 2004 the School Board Chair appointed Mr. Barrera as the liaison School Board Member to the Audit Committee.

Mr. Barrera is married and has two sons.
